Once, there were five churches in Dilijan. However, all of them were destroyed over time. Today the spiritual center of Dilijan residents occupies one of the Old Dilijan Hotel Complex facilities where services are held, and the spirit of the community is preserved thanks to the devotion of the local priest, Father Shavarsh.
In 2021, residents of Dilijan and all the concerned people united around a participatory initiative of the city church construction started in 2015 by philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan.
The design of the church building is based on the principle of the “dome hall” of Armenian church architecture, similar to the architectural solutions used in the early medieval Katoghike Church and Aruchavank in Talin.
The decorative design of the church facades with columns and arches is dictated by the impressive size of the church. Bell towers are located on both sides of the dome to emphasize the volumetric-spatial structure and the “east-west” axis. According to the project, the church will have three main entrances. The church building is made of Armenian white travertine typical of the region.
The project architect is Maxim Atayants, Merited Architect of the Russian Federation․
